Institute of Book Publishing

The Institute of Book Publishing was the first of its kind in India, It was established by Late Shri O.P. Ghai (the founder chairman of Sterling Publishers Pvt. Ltd.) in the eighties with a thought to bring professionalism in the Indian Book Industry.

Since then the Institute has trained and imparted valuable knowledge about book publishing and the Indian publishing industry to a large number of participants. The Institute gets participants not only from India but also from India’s neighbouring countries, Africa and Europe. The Institute organises Condensed Courses for Publishing Professionals and Intensive Courses for Editors in Book Publishing.

Founder - Mr. O.P. Ghai

A graduate of Panjab University, Lahore, Late Mr. O.P. Ghai was the first recipient of Prakashak Ratna Award. Though he commenced his career as a teacher, he moved to publishing and launched University Publishers in Jalandhar in 1947. Thereafter he was Chairman, Reception Committee for the First Annual Conference of the Federation of Publishers and Booksellers Associations in India, New Delhi, in 1955. Soonafter, in 1956, he attended a course on Book Publishing in London, organised by the British Council. And subsequently, he participated in the l4th International Publishers Congress in Rome and Florence.On his return from Europe he shifted his base to New Delhi and established Sterling Publishers.
His strident and dynamic approach found him representation on countless bodies as the President, Federation of Publishers and Booksellers Associations in India; Panjab Publishers Association; Federation of Indian Publishers; Asian Association of Scholarly Publishers; Vice-President (Asia), International Association of Scholarly Publishers; Member of Executive Committee of the Afro-Asian Book Council; Executive Committee of International Publishers Association; National Book Development Board; National Book Development Council and many more.

In 1979, he was honoured with a Festschrift Volume, Indian Publishing Since Independence, on his sixtieth birthday. He also figures in Who's Who in India; Who's Who in the World; and Men of Achievement. Well-known for his exceptional organising abilities, he organised the 24th International Publishers Congress, New Delhi, 1992. Mr. O.P. Ghai's scholastic proclivity found its way in a number of publications.


Mr. S.K. Ghai is the Chairman of Sterling Publishers (P) Ltd. and the Sterling group of companies.He has been associated with the Institute of Book Publishing since its inception in 1985. He has been actively involved with the world of publishing for the last 60 years.

The Federation of Indian Publishers conferred him the award for Significant Contribution to Book Promotion & Publishing in 2001.
He has served as the Chairman of the Books, Publications & Printing panel of CAPEXIL, Ministry of Commerce, Government of India,during 2008–2011.
Mr. Ghai is active in publishing forums nationally and internationally.He has visited and participated in many International Book Fairs.
In 2009, he delivered the prestigious Bengal Book Publishing Lecture on Indian Books and Publishing Services for the World Market.

He has compiled and authored several books. These include Face to Face with Indian Publishing Professionals (2012), One to One: Glimpses of Indian Publishing Industry (2008), and Intellectual Property: Issues in the Publishing Industry (2008).He has co-edited two books – Understanding Copyright Law: How to Handle Book Piracy (2006) and Afro-Asian Publishing: Contemporary Trends (1992). He is the editor of the e-journal,Publishing Today.
Mr. Ghai is a senior member of publishing bodies in India, including FIP, FEPI and FPBAI. He has served as an office bearer and is currently on the executive committee of FPBAI. He is on the course-faculty of the National Book Trust, India, an examiner in the Postgraduate Diploma Course in Publishing at University of Delhi, and a member of the Expert Committee (Publishing), of IGNOU. He is on the editorial board of Publishing Research Quarterly, New York, since 2007.
